For many years, Special Olympics Colorado’s figure skating program at the University of Denver has had a very special friend. SOCO volunteer Arlene Sibrell was head of accounting for all figure skating competitions, doing all paperwork and posting scores for competing athletes. She judged at competitions and has served as an advocate for SOCO figure skaters.
Sadly, Arlene passed away several weeks ago, and will be missed greatly by all members of the Special Olympics Colorado community.
Karen Schleu, Skating Coach for DU Figure Skating, shared, “Last year at our skating club banquet, my daughter was going to get an award from Arlene. Arlene asked me how Mallory would like to have the award given to her- shaking hands or just presenting it to her. Arlene said that she wasn’t much for hugging. I told Arlene that if Mallory didn’t get a hug she would think that something was wrong, so Arlene gave Mallory a hug as she presented her with the award. That was Arlene, always doing what was best for our athletes.”
In lieu of flowers, Arlene’s family requested that people make donations to the Special Olympics Figure Skating program at DU, which has raised over $800 for this program. SOCO’s Figure Skating program was lucky to have Arlene’s passion and support and she will be greatly missed.
