October School of the Month: Fox Ridge Middle School

Fox Ridge Middle School has been involved with Special Olympics Colorado and has participated in all aspects of Unified Schools/Project Unify for five years. They do an amazing job of embracing a Unified culture within all parts of their school. The school’s liaison, Eva Tucker, has been a fearless leader and does everything to ensure her students are having fun and being inclusive. They have a Peer Buddies group is up to about 55 members and together they play games, make crafts and cook. Last year Fox Ridge MS did a Unified kick off celebration along with the Hoops for Heart Campaign.  They also had students at each grade level spoke in front of their grade level peers about the R-word campaign and what it means at Fox Ridge MS. They also celebrated ‘Spread the Word to End the Word’ day for the 3rd year. Grade levels had assemblies and watched a video put together by our Peer Buddies group.  At lunch students were able to sign a banner and pledge to choose respect and end the use of the R word. In a sports capacity, Fox Ridge MS has participated in an exhibition game at the Unified Basketball Tournament at Grandview High School.  They also had students participated in 2 Unified Soccer Clinics where students from the surrounding high school soccer teams came to give us some instruction on soccer skills and coached us in some scrimmage games. This year they will be offering an accredited Unified PE Class.  Fox Ridge Middle School is an outstanding partner and ally of Special Olympics Colorado!
