Jeffry Van Heukelem first started competing in Special Olympics when he was eight years old, at which time he could barely walk. At the age of 34, Jeffry now competes on the Southsiders team in track and field, bowling, bocce, cycling, and basketball. Jeffry’s mom, Catherine, states that it doesn’t matter what kind of medal or ribbon Jeffry receives, as long as he gets to spend time with his fellow athletes and feel the excitement of having the crowd cheer him on and shout his name in encouragement.
Most recently, Jeffry competed at the 2016 State Summer Games in the 100 Meter, Softball Throw, and Standing Long Jump. Currently he is in the midst of bowling season.
Because of his tremendous spirit, contagious enthusiasm, positive attitude and love of sports Special Olympics Colorado is thrilled to recognize Jeffry Van Heukelem as the 2016 Male Athlete of the Year.
