Unified Sports Program "Special Olympics Colorado provides the opportunity for ALL my kids with or without disabilities to train, compete and have fun together. -Leslie Bjorgum, SOCO Coach and Mother
The Unified Sports® program was first introduced in Colorado in 1986. The program began as a Unified Sports® softball league with six teams hosted by the Boulder Parks & Recreation Expand program. Since then Unified Sports® has grown dramatically, and is now included all of SOCOs 22 year-round sports. Presently there are more than 1,200 Unified® partners in Colorado, and this number continues to grow. Because of the Unified Sports® program, Special Olympics Colorado is truly a sports program for individuals of any ability. |

The
Unified Sports® program is one of the best tools
Special Olympics Colorado has to increase inclusion
in the community. It helps break down barriers that
have historically separated people with intellectual
disabilities by combining Special Olympics athletes
with their non-disabled peers (partners) on the same
sports team. Partners train and compete right alongside
Special Olympics athletes, giving them encouragement
and advice every step of the way.
