Global Messengers
The Global Messenger Program is instrumental to the continued success and growth of Special Olympics Colorado. This program promotes our athletes as the best advocates of our organization, providing them with presentation skills necessary to speak in a formal setting. Our athletes are given the opportunity to tell in their own words, what’s so special about Special Olympics, and why others should choose to participate.

Jerry HandleyGlobal Messengers are used in a variety of ways from emceeing the opening ceremonies of an area or state competition, to speaking in front of an audience of potential sponsors and donors.

The Global Messenger Program, now a part of Special Olympics programs worldwide, has its roots in Colorado. In 1988 a Special Olympics Colorado athlete, Greg Mark, was asked to join his area’s Outreach Committee as an athlete recruiter. He eagerly accepted the assignment, and in less than six weeks he recruited 30 fellow adults with intellectual disabilities to join the Special Olympics family. SOCO now has 25 certified Global Messengers throughout the state who enjoy promoting our program whenever possible to their peers and their communities.
