Coaches Info & Training
Special Olympics Colorado utilizes hundreds of volunteer
coaches each year. The state is divided into six geographic
areas, and each area offers numerous sports and
a number of athletic competitions across four sport seasons annually.
Coaches volunteer approximately eight weeks, two to
four hours per week. (Our athletes train in one sport
for eight weeks. This includes an area competition and
one state competition.) We ask unsupervised coaches
to be at least 16 years old. Volunteers under the age
of 16 may coach with the supervision of a guardian.
Coaching duties include:
- Ensuring that each athlete is properly registered
with Special Olympics Colorado before any training
takes place.
- Assessing the ability of each athlete and
providing the appropriate training.
- Maintaining a thorough knowledge of the rules
and applying the rules when training the athletes
or conducting a competition.
- Provide proper supervision, plan practices,
communicate with parents, provide a safe practice
environment, and establish emergency medical
procedures and first aid.
- Become a positive influence to athletes, striving
to give them an awareness of their own self-worth,
ability, courage and capacity to grow and improve.
