Become an Athlete
Athletes are the core of the Special Olympics movement.
Special Olympics strives to create new and innovative
programming that celebrates the achievements of people
with intellectual disabilities and welcomes participation
from everyone.
In addition to having a great time, a recent Yale University
study found that Special Olympics athletes benefit from:
- Improved physical fitness and sports skills
- Enhanced self-confidence and social competency
- Greater readiness for employment
- Better preparation for independent living
- Increased ability to make personal decisions
- Improved friendships and family relationship

Healthy Athletes
Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program helps athletes to improve their training and competition by focusing on overall health and fitness. This is achieved through basic health screenings, provision of preventative and treatment services, educational information and referrals for follow-up care. Athletes have enhanced sports experiences and improved well-being as a result of receiving critical health services. Learn more...
Global Messengers

public speaking skills to represent Special Olympics
and its athletes. The Global Messenger program is an
integral part of Special Olympics Athlete Leadership
Programs, which encourage athletes to explore leadership
roles other than that of competitor". More...
