Description of Sports Offered
Special Olympics Colorado offers four sports seasons annually, each of which culminates in area level and/or statewide competitions.
Winter (January to March)
Alpine skiing
Eleven categories of competition, including walk and
glide events, sit-ski competition, and giant slalom
and slalom races.
Basketball
Seven categories of competition, including individual
skills competitions, team games and demonstration events
like dribbling, shooting and passing.
Cross-country skiing
Eighteen categories of competition, including races
from 10m to 10k and relays.
Figure skating
Seven categories of competition, including solo and
pairs ice dancing, skills competitions and solo and
pairs skates.
Speed skating
Twelve categories of competition, including 10m to 1500m
races and relay events.
Snowshoeing
Seventeen categories of competition, including relays
and races from 10m to 10k.

Statewide Competitions

Spring (April to June)
Aquatics
Thirty-two categories of competition, including 25m
to 400m races, assisted swim events, and team relays.
Athletics
Forty-five categories of track and field competition,
including walking events from 15m to 1500m, runs and
dashes from 5m to 5k, jumping events, throwing events,
relays, wheelchair races, pentathlon and demonstration
events.
Gymnastics
Forty categories of competition in rhythmic and artistic
events such as uneven bars, floor exercises, pommel
horse, rings, balance beam, etc..
Powerlifting
Eight categories of competition, including bench press,
dead lift and squat, plus push ups and sit ups.
Soccer
Seven categories of competition, including five-a-side
team games, individual skills competitions and demonstration
events in dribbling, shooting and throw-in.
Statewide Competitions

Summer (July to September)
Bocce
Three categories of competition for singles and doubles.
Cycling
Eleven categories of competition, including 500m to
5k time trials, 10k to 40k road races and tandem events.
Golf
Four categories of competition, including team play
and individual skills.
Softball
Four categories of competition, including individual
skills, teeball and team games.
Tennis
Four categories of competition, including singles, doubles
and individual skills competition.
Statewide Competitions
Fall (September to December)
Bowling
Six categories of competition for singles, doubles,
four-person teams and ramp bowling.
Volleyball
Four categories of competition, including team play
and individual skills.
Statewide Competitions
- Fall Classic, Denver, November
Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) is offered year-round. MATP is for athletes who don't yet have the skills to participate in a competitive environment. It aims to develop their motor skills, with tasks such as pushing a ball, or stepping across a low bar. Many athletes have physical disabilities, as well as severe learning disabilities.
