Welcome

You are about to become part of an exciting program and will experience firsthand the power of Special Olympics programs. Special Olympics participation encompasses 22 official sports, Unified Sports, Athlete Leadership Programs, Project Unify, Red Shirt Rookies and Young Athletes sports play programs and community initiatives– truly a spectrum of choices! So let’s get started!

Athletes are the focus of our organization and the reason we are here. Our traditional sports program serves athletes from ages 8 onward and children from 2 to 5 can participate in our Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics Colorado also offers transitional activities for 6 and 7 year olds.

Families play a critical role in the continued success and growth of Special Olympics Colorado. Families are a constant source of support and encouragement for their athlete. There are many ways for families to get involved, please contact our Volunteer and Family Services Manager Claire Viater for more information.

Our History and Vision

Special Olympics was founded in 1969 on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Special Olympics believes that consistent training is essential to the development of sport skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Special Olympics also believes that through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually; families are strengthened; and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is untied in understanding people with intellectual disabilities in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance.

Special Olympics Colorado provides year-round training and competition in 22 sports for more than 20,761+ athletes living in the state of Colorado. With the support of more than 9,000 volunteers and the generosity of Colorado citizens, corporations and local businesses, Special Olympics Colorado is able to offer more than 100 events annually to individuals with intellectual disabilities age 2 and up. Participation with other athletes, Unified partners (typically developing peers), coaches, sponsors and volunteers builds confidence and creates opportunities to participate as productive and respected members of society by increasing public awareness of the athletes’ capabilities.

  • Coach

Coaching is a great avenue for those who love sports and want to work closely with our athletes.

  • Compete

We offer 22 sports for athletes 8 years old and throughout a lifetime. Many of our athletes compete in 3-4 sports throughout the year. We also offer sports skills development programs for athletes as young as 2 years old.
