Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate
in Special Olympics Colorado?
We offer sports programs for children and adults with
intellectual disabilities. Athletes must be at least
8 years old to compete and at least 6 years old to train.
Sixty percent of our athletes are adults! Individuals
and organizations can be involved in Special Olympics
Colorado. We work with schools, parks and recreation districts,
families, group homes and other organizations.
How much does it cost?
Special Olympics programs are completely free. Special
Olympics Colorado provides coaches, uniforms, sports
equipment and training facilities, plus transportation,
lodging and meals for area and state events.
Please note that Special Olympics Colorado depends
entirely on contributions from the community. SOCO does
not receive funding from federal, state, or local government,
United Way or Kennedy Foundation.
When are the Special Olympics?
Special Olympics Colorado actually offers 20 sports
year-round, with more than 100 competitions across the
state throughout the year. We offer four sports seasons
annually, each of which culminates in statewide competition. Click here for a description of the sports offered each season.
Will it be too
competitive or too easy?
A special divisioning process ensures that Special Olympics
athletes compete against others of similar ability, from
those with very basic skills to most proficient athletes.
